GSREC 6 Hours of Sebring 2016 Recap

The Starting Grid for the Sebring 6

The 2016 Sebring 6 hour brought out the competition, both on the track and the environment.

With 9 cars on the grid, 3 in the P1 category, and 6 in the GT category, the drivers had not only each other to contend with, but the track conditions as well. The action began at 12pm EDT on April 16th, 2016. The weather report, at the start, showed clear skies and a dry track, something that would soon change.

Stint 1 in the P1 category started strong. The #7 Toyota of K Motorsports got ahead of the pack early on pulling ahead of the Audi's by a lap from the #2 SamKel Racing Audi, and a half a lap of the #17 Premature Acceleration Audi. The final mileage after stint one in P1 was:

P1 After Stint 1

1. #7 K Motorsports - 205 miles

2. #17 Premature Acceleration - 203 miles

3. #2 SamKel - 201 miles

The competition was equally stiff in the GT category. The #72 of the TNT Bentley pulled ahead of the pack by a bit in the dry, finishing about a lap and a half ahead of the second place car of the number #33 PMF Lamborghini. At the end of stint one, only a half of lap separated 2nd and 3rd in the GT category, 3rd place being that of the B&FF Corvette. The Mclaren of SECR racing was experiencing mechanical failures which would be resolved in the next stint. The final mileage after stint one in GT was:

GT After Stint 1

1. #72 TNT - 183 miles

2. #33 PFM - 178 miles

3. B&FF - 176 miles

4. #74 420 - 176 miles

5. #60 SECR - 161 miles

6. #10 420 -?

As the cars changed drivers, the crews changed tires as stint 2 brought the thunderstorm. Simply calling it wet is an understatement. Florida Monsoon is more accurate. They call the wet the great equalizer, the racing mirrored this. In P1, the racing was dicey. With positions changing multiple times throughout the entire stint. Premature Acceleration was in the lead the majority of the time with 2nd and 3rd changing many times between K Motorsports and SamKel Racing, the end result however was as follows:

P1 After Stint 2

1. #17 Premature Acceleration - 390 miles

2. #7 K Motorsports - 389 miles

3. #2 SamKel - 385 miles

In GT, the start of the stint definitely was closer than the dry. Traffic mixed it up and a few minor racing incidents both within the class, as well as with the blue flags, made the action exciting. TNT widened its lead by a little over 10 miles. Team 420 pulled out all the stops coming within 2 miles of the second place car of TNT, with B&FF falling off pace dramatically by the end of the stint.

GT After Stint 2

1. #72 TNT - 352 miles

2. #33 PFM - 341 miles

3. #74 420 - 339 miles

4. #60 SECR - 310 miles

5. #59 B&FF - 180 miles

6. #10 420 - ?

The finale of the Sebring 6 happened in the the darkness of the moonless Florida night. While some drivers settled into the cold, sleepless night, others experienced the real thrill of racing, mechanical failure. In the P1 class, with BCK at the wheel, K Motorsports had catastrophic engine failure with a mile and a half lead. An absolutely heart breaking finish with the competition being so fierce for first and second throughout the entirety of the day. The #17 Audi ending up taking P1, with SamKel racing finishing second. With their engine failure, K Motorsports finished P3 in the P1 category, still taking much needed points for the GSREC.

P1 Final Standings

2. #2 SamKel Audi (Samson, Maverick) - 580 miles (155 laps)

3. #7 K Motorsports Toyota (dakinca, BCK) - 489 miles (130 laps)

In GT, the field settled. The drivers pretty much maintained their positions throughout the entire stint. The first couple of laps however were rather exciting with some very close racing.  The final results mirrored that of much of the days.
