Nightmare Conquers Daytona

DAYTONA, FL - GSR’s 1969 Canadian American Challenge Cup kicked off Sunday at the world-famous Daytona International Speedway under a sunny sky, serving as an oasis from the doldrums of winter. A fleet of 9 brand new Group 7 cars took to the grid, looking to make their mark on North America’s premier road-racing series.

Nightmare x24x performed as expected, starting from pole and pulling and pulling away with a speed that would make the Apollo 8 astronauts jealous. The #24 MBI/Castrol McLaren led all 40 laps on the way to his 136 th GSR win.

“Pretty solid run today from start to finish for the Castrol McLaren. Following winning the pole, we were able to get a clean start and pull away as they battled for second early on. From there I was able to just focus on getting into a rhythm and keeping the wheels on the track.”

A difference in fuel mileage allowed the Lola’s to make a charge late in the race. Following pit stops by BloodtyprOwdy18 and Murphys Laaawl on lap 23, Manuel CR and BCKracer71 assumed second and third in the order. The four cars remained engaged in a heated battle for the rest of the race, swapping positions numerous times. In the end, the #18 MBI/Champion McLaren of BloodtyprOwdy18 was able to squeeze by BCKracer71 with two laps to go to bring home a second-place finish.

“The car wasn’t perfect, but we were able to manage for the most part today,” said Sunoco Raptor Racing driver BCKracer71. “I thought we had a golden opportunity when we heard about the fuel situation and it nearly payed off. Unfortunately, the tires started to wear off in the last 3 laps and we just couldn’t maintain second.”

Towards the end of the grid, many drivers found it difficult to adjust to the high power of the Can-Am cars.

“It was a tough day,” Said First Capital Autosport driver Mr Blonde V, who finished 9 th. “The competition in this series is incredibly high, and we just weren’t prepared. Time to pack it up and get ready for Sebring on the 22 nd.”

The GSR Can-Am Challenge Cup will return January 22 nd for Round #2 at Sebring International Raceway with a 12:00 EST start time.
